The Gateway Award is an accessible Awards programme, specifically designed for people with a learning disability. The programme enables people to set and reach goals in various areas of their lives including independence, health and leisure as well as volunteering.

The Gateway Award is similar in structure to the Duke of Edinburgh Award with bronze, silver and gold levels. Participants achieve their awards by participating in a wide range of activities throughout the year. We deliver the award programme to groups of people from our centre but most activities take place in the community.

Key responsibilities

You will be the assigned staff member to one participant which will involve:

  • Providing personalised support to meet their individual needs as outlined in their care plan which may include administration of specific medication (training provided) and support with any personal care requirements.
  • Ensuring their welfare and safety when on-site at Wirral Mencap and out in the community
  • Supporting the participant to engage in a range of activities to develop their fitness, lifestyle skills, hobbies and access to the community
  • Empowering them to be as independent as possible; providing additional support where necessary but supporting them to integrate with the rest of the group in the same way as any other participant
  • Encouraging them to try new things and to achieve as much as possible during sessions, supporting them to reach their full potential.
  • Working alongside the Supervisor to ensure they are reaching the desired outcomes as set by the Gateway Award and Wirral Mencap
  • Working as part of a team with the Supervisor and other Support Workers
  • Following Wirral Mencap policies and procedures
